What to Serve with Chicken Wings (25 Best Side Dishes)

If you’re anything like me then you love a good chicken wing, fried, grilled, smoked, or baked, all chicken wings are great. When it comes to chicken wings, there are three different cuts that you might receive and they are often the topic of debate.

The chicken wing is made up of drumettes which are the part of the wing that join to the body, flats or wingettes which are the flat middle part of the wing, and the less common tips which are the feather-shaped ends of the chicken wing, there isn’t a lot of meat on this part but some people enjoy chewing on them.

What is your favorite type of chicken wing? Regardless of what it is, you’re going to need great sides for wings.

So you might be wondering, what sides to serve with chicken wings? Well, wonder no further, here is a list of the 25 best sides for wings.

1. Oven Baked Fries

Fries are a real obvious contender when thinking of good sides for wings and these fries are some of the best you will ever make.
If you’re looking for a healthy side dish then this is a great one for you to try.

These oven-baked fries use significantly less oil than the oil-fried versions and they work incredibly with a garlic dip.
My top tip for this dish is to make sure that you soak and then dry the potatoes before cooking.

This step will remove excess starch from the potatoes and will mean that they become extra crispy in the oven.

2. Classic Wedge Salad

Depending on how you serve your wings, they can be quite a heavy dish and you might be looking for lighter and more refreshing sides for chicken wings.
Wedge salads can be incredible and this classic is no exception.

I know that sometimes salads get a bad reputation for lacking in flavor and variation but just wait until you try this flavor explosion!

This wedge salad is made from a wedge of lettuce smothered in blue cheese dressing and topped with tomatoes, blue cheese crumbs, bacon, and chives. It really doesn’t get much better!

3. Avocado Fries

Avocado fries are an interesting, incredibly tasty, truly unique side and if you find yourself wondering ‘what goes with chicken wings?’ then this is a great answer for you!

These avocado fries are easy and fun to make and healthy. I normally serve these fries with ranch and they go down a treat with absolutely everyone.

In order for these fries to work, you’re going to need a perfectly ripe avocado – this means that it can’t be too firm or too squishy.

4. Best Baked Sweet Potato

Sweet potatoes are a great tasting side and a really healthy one too. It’s not too often that a vegetable comes along that children actively want to eat, and this superfood certainly is one of these.

This side can be made with only 5 minutes of preparation, and 55 minutes of hands-off cooking.

If you want to serve a super healthy side then this is a great option for you, packed full of vitamins, fiber, and minerals.

5. Old Fashioned Onion Rings

Chicken wings can be a very refined ingredient but I love a good sweet and sticky barbecue chicken wing.

When I’m having these indulgent and sticky wings, I can’t help but think that onion rings are the perfect side dish for chicken wings. These particular onion rings are everything that a good onion ring should be.

This recipe recommends frying the battered onion rings in a deep fryer but if you are looking for something slightly healthier then you can also bake these crispy treats.

6. Avocado and Greek Salad

If I had to pick one salad to eat for the rest of my life it would be, without a doubt, a greek salad.

This twist on a classic greek salad will make a great side for any meal but it works really well with wings!

Why not go the whole way? Why not make the entire meal greek? One of my all-time favorite ways to have chicken wings is greek-style with a tzatziki dipping sauce and greek salad on the side. It’s the perfect summer dinner.

7. Easy Fried Rice

Fried rice is a real tasty Asian dish and one that you can master in one afternoon.

Rice works really well with any kind of chicken dish but if you happen to be making Asia-style wings, and you’re wondering what to eat with chicken wings? Then this is a great option for you.

If you want some inspiration for a great Asian-style chicken wing then one of my favorites has to be chicken wings marinated in teriyaki sauce.

8. Cornbread

Cornbread is one of those American sides that you don’t really hear of the outside of the states. That said, it is a great addition to any meal.

Sometimes I find myself wondering what goes well with chicken wings, but the truth is that wins are incredibly versatile and work well with pretty much anything!

I’ve tried many dry cornbread recipes in my time but this certainly isn’t one! one of the main ingredients and flavors of this recipe is butter and it also uses buttermilk to make the bread extra moist.

9. Delicata Squash Rings

Onion rings are a real classic when imagining the perfect side dish for chicken wings but I’m going to need you to forget about onion rings because these might just be better!

Served with a lemon garlic sauce, very similar to aioli, this sweet and crispy ring is sure to make its way to the top of your favorite side dish list.

Whenever I’m bringing an appetizer to a pot-luck style event, this is one of my go-to dishes and I can guarantee that it tasted great as a chicken wing side dish.

10. Creamy Cucumber Salad

Now, I love cucumbers but I’ve met a few people recently who are big cucumber haters. I mean, what is there to not like about the humble cucumber?

If you’re looking for a low-carb salad that is packed full of flavor then this is a great option for you!

This creamy cucumber salad is super easy to make and it will take you just 10 minutes to prepare all of the ingredients and have it ready. Creamy cucumber salad makes a great addition to any side dish and it will be a new favorite quick dish.

11. Simple Mac and Cheese

Everyone has their own mac and cheese recipe that they swear by and it is a dish that you’re sure to see at any food event.

If you’re looking for a simple, quick-to-make, and relatively cheap mac and cheese recipe then this is the one for you.

Chicken and mac and cheese make a natural marriage and this is a side dish to serve with chicken wings that is sure to go down a treat among children and adults alike.

12. Quick and Easy Pasta Salad

If you’re looking for appetizers to go with wings then a pasta salad is a great contender.

This pasta salad is quick and easy to make and takes just 20 minutes to make from start to finish.

For me, sometimes I want something heavier than a salad but still light and this is where the pasta salad really comes into its own.

One of my favorite things about this pasta salad is that it keeps really well in the fridge so if you don’t finish it at dinner time then it will make an awesome lunch the next day!

13. Air Fryer Roasted Sweet Potatoes

Like many others, getting an air fryer truly changed my life. These little sweet potato bites are crispy on the outside, soft and sweet on the inside, and really healthy.

If you don’t already have an air-fryer then run, don’t walk, to order one now, they truly are revolutionary.

If you, like me, have ever wondered what is a good side dish for chicken wings? Then this is about to become the obvious side dish for you.

I use these on tacos, in salads, as a side with chicken wings, and even as an appetizer, these really are going to change your whole menu!

14. Mediterranean Cauliflower Salad

This Mediterranean cauliflower salad is a great side dish to serve with wings and is loosely inspired by a tabbouleh.

Tabbouleh is a traditional Eastern Mediterranean dish from Lebanon and Syria, it is made from tomatoes, onions, parsley, lemon juice, and olive oil with a base of bulgur.

Bulgur is a type of grain that is very high in carbs so is not suitable for gluten-free people or people following a keto diet.

This side dish tastes just as incredible as a normal tabbouleh but it uses cauliflower instead of bulgur, meaning it is gluten-free and suitable for people following keto!

15. Oven Roasted Vegetables

Oven-roasted vegetables are a great addition to any dish but they work particularly well as a chicken wing side dish.

This recipe takes just 20 minutes to make and the roasting of the vegetables ensures that they are charred and sweet, everything that a good vegetable should be.

Another thing I love about this dish is how few pots there are to clean afterward. You simply pop all of your vegetables in one pan and leave them in the oven for 20 minutes, it really doesn’t get much easier!

16. Coleslaw

What goes good with chicken wings? Coleslaw goes good with chicken wings!

Did you know that the word coleslaw comes from the dutch ‘Koosla’ which translates to cabbage salad and that coleslaw originally comes from the Netherlands?

It’s super easy to make a good coleslaw but people still buy it from the grocery store! All you need to make this recipe is 4 ingredients and just 5 minutes of your time. What’s stopping you?

17. Corn on the Cob

If you’re looking to cook your chicken wings on the barbecue then corn on the cob is an obvious choice for a side dish. That said, there is a little debate as to whether you should grill or boil the corn.

Personally, I’ve always been on team boil. Now, it sounds easy enough to boil a cob of corn but there really is some skill to it.

This recipe will teach you how to perfectly boil your cob of corn and will ensure that you have the sweetest and juiciest cob you’ve ever had!

18. Garden Salad

The trick to a really good garden salad is the dressing and this is a great but very simple one.

If you’re looking for good sides for wings then this garden salad will not disappoint.

Better still, you probably already have all of the ingredients at home.

One of my favorite things about salads is how customizable and flexible they are. you really can’t go wrong with a good salad, take ingredients out, add new ones in, go crazy!

19. Garlic Butter Cauliflower Rice

Cauliflower rice is a great keto swap for normal grains and it is very tasty.

This particular recipe is made with a beautiful garlic butter and it goes incredibly well with a chicken dish.

You can, of course, swap out the cauliflower rice for a normal grain if you prefer the taste or want to have more carbs but I really wouldn’t recommend it – this recipe is delicious!

You can make this entire side dish in just 15 minutes and if you’re looking for good sides for chicken wings then this is a great option for you.

20. The Best Potato Salad

This Southern classic makes for a great side to chicken and has even been called the best potato salad recipe by many people.

I love to serve this potato salad with grilled chicken but I think it could make a great addition to a southern fried chicken dish too, and I definitely want to try it out in the future.

After all, what could be better than serving two Southern classics side-by-side?

The secret ingredient in this dish has to be the potatoes. I know, I know, the potatoes are in the name, they’re not exactly a secret! But to make the best potato salad you must use Yukon gold potatoes.

21. Sautéed Brussel Sprouts

Look, Brussel sprouts have a bad reputation but there really is nothing to be afraid of when cooking them.

The reason why Brussel sprouts have a bad reputation is that people often boil them until they’re mushy but it doesn’t have to be that way and sautéed Brussel sprouts are a great side dish for chicken wings.

Adding some toasted nuts to this dish can really elevate it.

I like to add some pine nuts to my skillet and saute them alongside the sprouts, giving a lovely toasted flavor.

22. Butternut Squash Salad

Butternut squash is a beautiful and versatile flavor that works really well regardless of how you decide to prepare it.

In this salad, the butternut squash is paired with pomegranate seeds, dates, spices, pistachios, and goat’s cheese and it tastes out of this world.

If you’re looking for the perfect balance of satisfying and refreshing, and sweet and spiced then this is a great salad for you to try out, I highly recommend making it and it is something I make all fall.

23. Air Fryer Jalapeno Poppers

If, like me, you are a fan of a little spice then these Mexican jalapeno poppers are a great recipe for you to try out and they make a really good side with chicken wings.

These jalapeno poppers are filled with cream cheese and coated with crispy panko breadcrumbs giving the perfect balance of cheesy, crispy, spicy, and absolutely tasty.

Now, you can make these in a standard deep fat fryer but making them in an air fryer gets rid of any oil usage and makes these even healthier.

24. The Best Mashed Potatoes

Mashed potato is one of the greatest and most overlooked side dishes of all time.

There are two main camps when it comes to mashed potatoes, skin on and skins off.

This recipe is firmly on the skin-on side of this debate. However, don’t worry if you prefer your mashed potatoes without skin, simply peel them beforehand and proceed with the recipe.

You’re probably wondering what makes these mashed potatoes so good.

They are generally atypical to your average mash but I would have to say that the addition of cream cheese makes an incredible difference.

25. Baked Zucchini Chips

Baked zucchini chips are a great side dish and an even better snack so make sure to scale up the recipe and make plenty of these treats.

I’m always looking for low-carb alternatives to potato chips and zucchini chips are a great and tasty option. Because I love these so much, I often make way too many.

if this happens to you then don’t panic because they keep perfectly in the freezer.
